The Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) obtained its first good images during 2004 and is currently in the midst of commissioning and testing. In a matter of months two of the first-generation instruments will be installed and commissioning observations will then begin. By November 2005, in time for the official opening, the first phase of the performance verification of the telescope and instruments will be completed. This illustrated talk will give an overview of SALT, the first generations instrumentation and the current status of the project. In addition, some of the initial science programs and opportunities will be discussed.
