Extremely metal poor galaxies (XMPGs) and planetary nebulae (PNe) are very different astronomical objects. XMPGs are gas-rich HII galaxies which possibly best approximate the properties of young galaxies formed ~13 Gyr ago. PNe are short-time phase of stellar evolution. Both have strong emission lines in their spectra and can be selected and studied using about the same methods. I will review the importance of the search and detailed studies both of these types of objects.
