This talk details the development to date and future plans
for the MeerKAT radio telescope whose first phase is currently under
development at the new radio astronomy site in the Karoo. MeerKAT is
intended to be an 80 dish instrument operating at L- and X-band which
should stimulate South Africa's science and technology sectors,
perform world class science and enhance South Africa's SKA site bid.
