I will give a review of the current status of our understanding of AGN evolution in the context of their space-density and host galaxy properties. I will then present recent results from out new survey to find the most distant AGN with the aim of probing the Epoch of Reionization via 21cm absorption with LOFAR and eventually the SKA.
