HMO Summer School

The Hermanus Magnetic Observatory (HMO) will host a summer school for the NASSP Honours students at the beginning of each year. The aim of the HMO Summer School is to introduce the students to a number of topics in space science through lectures, tutorials and practical experiences.

The summer school will include lectures, videos, and internet sessions in order to give NASSP students an introduction to the Earth's space environment. Topics will include:

  • Basic concepts in space plasma physics.
  • Structure and variations of the Earth's magnetic field.
  • The sun, solar activity, and the solar wind.
  • Structure of the ionosphere and plasmasphere.
  • Structure and dynamics of the magnetosphere.
  • The effects of space weather on man's technological systems.
