Intelligent Data Interpolation

Singular Spectrum Analysis (SSA) can be used to fill in the gaps in time series data [Kondrashov and Ghil , 2006]. The technique recreates the ‘smooth’ component of the variation. The method relies on access to two related data sets: a data set with missing data, and a continuous data set. The majority of Space Physics data consists of time series of measurements taken by an instrument over a period of days, weeks or even years. Unfortunately these instruments break down from time to time, resulting in gaps in the data. Under normal conditions the data for these gaps would be irretrievably lost. However, using this SSA technique at least the general form of the data in the gaps can be inferred.
