Introduction to distributed memory parallelization

Project: 
This project will explore a few concepts relevant to the art of parallel computing. The starting point will be to build and configure a Beowulf cluster consisting of a few desktop machines. The next step of the project involves learning and using MPI (message passing interface) to parallelize a few embarrassingly parallel algorithms such as the midpoint method of numerical integration. The last step would be to explore how parallel programing is used in Astrophysics.

Requirements for students to address: 
The project requires familiarity with the Linux operating system. The student must also know how to program, or willing to learn (preferably in C/C++/Fortran, but Python is also fine).
