MeerKAT Observations of the Polarised Diffuse Radio Emission of a Massive Galaxy Cluster

Project: 
In this project we propose to investigate the polarisation properties of the diffuse radio emission of the El Gordo galaxy cluster. This cluster is a massive merging system at redshift 0.87 that was originally discovered with the Atacama Cosmology Telescope and is known to exhibit radio relics associated with the shock front driven by the merging structures. Using existing early science L-band observations from MeerKAT, the student will study the polarised nature of this emission and therefore constrain the properties of the underlying physical processes at work.
