Towards understanding the extragalactic formaldehyde megamasers

Understanding astrophysical maser emission is for various reasons important. Astrophysical masers are found in a number of astrophysical environments and carry important information about the physical conditions and kinematics of such regions. Formaldehyde masers are one of those cases that is not well understood at present. The aim of this project is to revisit the problem of the pumping of these masers and with the aim to understand the pumping of the so-called extragalactic megamasers. In this project a numerical code will be used to investigate the conditions under which a population inversion of the 4.8 GHz formaldehyde masers can occur, which the specific aim to see whether the masers are pumped radiatively or collisionally.
